The Engine Codex
A solo-built fictional archive: about 40 invented symbolic forces — colors, materials, signals, states of grief — each written up and filed like a specimen in an institutional field guide. No plot. No characters. Just things stable enough to earn a name.
"Filed, cross-referenced, and refused permission to explain itself gently."ROLE

First time here?
- Start with the ten families a bit further down — they're the map.
- Read GRAY in full; it's a worked example of every entry's shape.
- You don't need all forty at once. Filed things can be sampled, not just memorized.
The Engine Codex is a solo worldbuilding project.
It’s an invented taxonomy of symbolic forces, each written up and filed like a specimen in an institutional archive. Every entry is classified as one of three things — an Engine is a symbolic force stable enough to hold its own shape (GRAY, RED, BLACK HOLE); a Drive is engine-like but defined by motion or compulsion rather than fixed form; an Unresolved Entity never stabilized enough to earn either title. Nothing is a character or a metaphor on its own — it's written and filed as if the archive were obligated to document it. I designed the taxonomy, wrote every entry, directed the imagery, and built and deployed the site.
WHAT THIS ISIn the archive’s own words:
“They are not gods. They are not characters. They are not metaphors alone. They are Engines: recurring structures of meaning given body, material, signal, habitat, relation, and aftereffect.”
The result reads like an institution's internal wiki for phenomena it doesn't fully control: strict entry templates, closed tag vocabularies, a folder structure enforced like policy. Every Engine is filed. Nothing is explained more than it has to be.
FILING PROCEDUREA taxonomy with its own constitution
Each a shared principle, not just a shared tag — see the full list below.
Individual Engines and Drives, each its own folder, each following the same fixed profile of fields.
Proto-Engines and fallen forms — same template, denied the word "Engine" unless canon has earned it.
Filed dyads between entries — CLARET ↔ MAUVE, INDIGO ↔ TURQUOISE.
ENGINE FAMILIESTen families, one archival system
The Engine families run from foundational cosmology to office-park despair, each with its own principle, and its own reason for existing as a group rather than a tag.
A glimpse of the Engine families
The Trinity of Cognition
UNIT, AUTOPILOT, NULL — feeling, governance, and mechanism.
The Quartet of Mattering
Dark Matter, Antimatter, White Matter, Gray Matter.
The Particulate Trio
DUST, SAND, ASH — reduced, carried, scattered, returned.
FAMILY 02 of 10, IN DEPTHThe Color Engines
A spectrum of perceptual pressure
"These colors are not arranged by purity. They are arranged by behavior."
Elsewhere, the Codex holds one visual law without exception: dark, monochrome, minimal, institutional: no unnecessary color. The Color Engines are the one family that pushes against that law, not by being decorative, but by being a working taxonomy of what perception does under pressure. Of the ten families, this is the one built out and pictured in full here; the rest are listed above rather than illustrated, for reasons of space, not importance.
Source colors
Ambiguity ends once something is marked enough to count
The RED Engine
Blood before proof. Heat before interpretation.
The PURPLE Engine
Damage made legible, recorded, and believed only after it was marked.
Colors of in-between
Suspended between meanings, never fully resolved
The PINK Engine
Almost red, almost tenderness.
The CLARET Engine
Red approaching purple, not arriving.
The INDIGO Engine
Almost blue, almost known.
The MAUVE Engine
CLARET after time has thinned it.
The TURQUOISE Engine
Possibility before collapse.
The GRAY Engine
Already the archive's own palette.
EXAMPLE ENTRYOne registry Engine, filed in full
Every Engine entry runs on the same fixed fields — Aliases (what else it's called), Material / Color (what it's made of, literally and symbolically), Special Notes (marginalia). Below, GRAY Engine’s filled out in full.
The GRAY Engine
"Adequacy mistaken for disappearance."
- The Mediocrity Drive
- The Almost-White Drive
- The Regolith Register
- The Surface of Everything That Happened
Matte gray of disputed composition — lunar regolith is preferred over basalt dust, impact glass, or unpainted office furniture (rejected, despite being emotionally persuasive). Not white. Not black. The Moon after the telescope focuses.
- GRAY is not humility. Humility chooses to lower the self before something greater. GRAY suspects nothing greater was ever present to begin with.
- GRAY is not moonlight. It is moondust.
- The ordinary is not the absence of meaning. It is where meaning spends most of its time.
DEEPER INTO THE FIELDFrom the archive, across families
Family: Color EnginesThe ULTRAVIOLET Engine
Not darkness. Darkness is only absence. This is worse.
Family: First EnginesThe BLACK HOLE Engine
"So be it." It does not process things. It contains them.
Family: First EnginesThe WHITE HOLE Engine
"Anything is possible."
Family: Material EnginesThe DIAMOND Engine
"Want, made hard enough to cut."
